Suki

Suki

Sapphire and Suki were surrendered to a shelter in Quebec because their owners had “too many animals.” The shelter was packed full, and we were happy to take these two cute rats in when asked. Sapphire and Suki made their way to Ontario by way of One Last Chance, and Freedom Drivers volunteers, and we’re very thankful for all the wonderful people who donate their time to transport rescued animals all across the country. Sapphire and Suki were given a clean bill of health at the vet, and they’re now ready to find their forever home! Sapphire and Suki are…   read more >>

Darla

Darla

Darla came into Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. She had a microchip, but when shelter staff traced the chip and called the number, the person stated that they lost Darla thirteen years ago and they assumed coyotes had gotten her. Darla’s original owner was not interested in taking her back. We’ll never know where Darla has been for those thirteen years, but if someone else had been taking care of her, that person didn’t come forward to claim her. Darla is the sweetest girl. Very friendly with a purr that never shuts off. We got her out of the…   read more >>

Raspberry

Raspberry

Raspberry’s owners went to Hamilton Animal Services to surrender their “hamster” because they no longer wanted her. Paperwork was filled out, and when shelter staff opened the box Raspberry arrived in, they were certainly taken aback to find not a hamster, but a guinea pig inside. A very frightened guinea pig with extremely overgrown nails. With a world of information at our fingertips, it’s tough to imagine that a person wouldn’t realize that they had a pet guinea pig – not a hamster. We can only hope that Raspberry wasn’t fed hamster food her whole life, seeing as guinea pigs…   read more >>

Hayward

Hayward

Hawk and Hayward were surrendered to Hamilton Animal Services when their owners no longer wanted them. Hawk and Hayward’s owners had purchased them from a pet store six months before surrendering them. We were happy to take in Hawk and Hayward, and they’re now settling in at their foster home. These boys are shy, but sweet. They definitely know when the treats are coming! They wheek and follow their foster mom everywhere to see what veggies are coming their way. So cute. Hawk and Hayward were given a clean bill of health at the vet, and now they’re available for…   read more >>

Alabaster

Alabaster was surrendered to Hamilton Animal Services when his owner no longer wanted him. We were happy to spring this sweet bunny out of the shelter when a foster home opened up. He was neutered on his rescue day and he recovered perfectly from the surgery. Alabaster is now ready to find his forever home! This rabbit is something special. He’s very, very friendly and calm. A real snuggle bunny! Here’s a report from his foster family: “Alabaster is a one of a kind bunny! We are baffled how and why anyone could surrender him. He is the most loving,…   read more >>

Harbour

Harbour

Harbour was found in a field in Ancaster and brought to Hamilton Animal Services. She was extremely thin, infested with fleas, and wasn’t putting weight on her back leg. Shelter staff treated Harbour for the fleas, and sent her to the vet for xrays. No fractures or any other reason for her lameness was seen on the xrays, so Harbour was sent back to the shelter to wait out her stray time. Poor Harbour didn’t want to eat, and her gums were very pale. Over the week she was at the shelter, her health went downhill. Being a municipal shelter,…   read more >>

Amaryllis

Amaryllis

Hamilton Animal Services reached out to us when they became overwhelmed with guinea pigs. We were happy to take in Angel and Amaryllis when a foster home became available. They received a clean bill of health from the vet, and they were adopted a short time later. Unfortunately, they were returned to us four months later through no fault of their own. Angel and Amaryllis are now looking for their forever home again. They’re very nice pigs. Curious and chatty. They love to play in their hay pile and they really like their daily veggie snacks. We’ll have a more…   read more >>

Tuesday

Tuesday

On Giving Tuesday, an injured kitten was brought into Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. Her tail had been degloved, and she had an injury to her back leg. It’s not known how these injuries happened, but we are thankful that HAS reached out to us right away so we could get this kitten immediate vet care. We had received many generous donations during the day, and we decided an appropriate name for this little one would be Tuesday. Thankfully, Tuesday doesn’t have any fractures, and the injury to her leg doesn’t seem too serious. Unfortunately though, Tuesday’s tail injury…   read more >>

Arthur

Arthur Christmas

We rescued Arthur from Hamilton Animal Services where he ended up as a stray. No owner came forward to claim him, despite him being at the shelter for more than a month. While at the shelter, Arthur had blood testing done that revealed he was FIV positive. He’s not showing any symptoms of the virus though, which is great. He does, unfortunately, have a large mass on his neck that the shelter was not able to have checked out, due to financial constraints and the huge number of cats currently at the shelter. Because Arthur had two strikes against him,…   read more >>

Dalton

Dalton

At the end of August, someone dumped an entire family of domestic rabbits onto a trail in Hamilton. Hamilton Animal Services was called and the rabbits brought into the shelter. These rabbits are among the lucky ones who survived being abandoned, but not all animals are so lucky. Domestic animals don’t have the survival skills that wild animals do. They often starve to death, or are killed by predators. There is always an alternative to dumping, and there are many resources available. Dumping a pet is never the answer. Please stop doing this. Fast forward to late October – the…   read more >>

Hitchcock

Hitch

Hitchcock (aka Hitch) was found in a barn and brought to Hamilton Animal Services. He was dragging his back let and his underside was extremely bruised. It’s not known what causes these injuries, but speculation is that he was kicked or somehow crushed. We got Hitch out of the shelter and straight to the vet. He was started on pain medication and he’ll have xrays and an ultrasound to be sure there are no internal injuries. This kitten has already been through so much in his short life, but he is still a sweet and friendly little thing. We’ll keep…   read more >>

Katsura

Katsura

Katsura ended up at Hamilton Animal Services as a stray and was not claimed. She is microchipped, but the chip was not traceable. This is your reminder to keep your pet’s microchip info up to date with the chip company! If you move or change your phone number without letting the company know, they won’t be able to contact you if your pet is lost or stolen. When Katsura arrived at the shelter, her ears were full of debris and they were very itchy. Her abdomen was distended, and her spine was prominent. Because of the overwhelming number of cats…   read more >>

Cauliflower

Cauliflower

Calla ended up at Hamilton Animal Services as a stray, but nobody came forward to claim her. She spent a few months at the shelter, and during that time she was spayed and vaccinated. When a spot opened up, were were happy to get Calla out of the small cage she was in at the shelter, and into a foster home where she has a lot more room to run and explore. She’s loving all the freedom she has now, and she’s lapping up the attention she’s getting from her foster mom. A month after we rescued Calla, we rescued…   read more >>

Buddy

Buddy - photo by Luca Simpson

Buddy came into Hamilton Animal Services with another rabbit. Technically they were strays, but it’s more likely they were dumped. Unfortunately, Buddy and the other rabbit (Tyson) got into a squabble that ended with Tyson being injured, so the shelter separated them. When a foster home opened up, we were happy to get Buddy out of the small cage he was in at the shelter, and into a loving foster home where he has much more space. Buddy is doing well in his foster home, and he’s soaking up all the love, attention and tasty snacks his foster family are…   read more >>
