Sunflower’s Baby

One of Sunflower‘s six babies passed away suddenly from unknown causes. Rest in peace little one.

Rossa

Rossa

* In September 2022, we had to say goodbye to our sweet Rossa. Her many health conditions caught up with her and it she told us it was her time to go. Though she was a challenge to care for because of her health issues, Rossa’s foster family loved her deeply and they’re very sad about her passing. Our hearts go out to them, and to Rossa’s “brother” Bobby, who will definitely be missing her. Rest in peace, sweet Rossa. We’ll never forget your sweet face. *   Rossa and Bobby were rescued from Hamilton Animal Services after they were found…   read more >>

Danish

Danish

Sadly, Danish passed away unexpectedly. We’re not sure what happened, but we are thankful he was in a loving foster home when he passed. Rest in peace Danish. We loved you!   Someone left a box full of gerbils in front of a pet store in Hamilton. Store staff found the box and called Hamilton Animal Services to pick them up. There were a number of gerbils in the box, including five newborn babies. HAS reached out to us for help, and we were able to take in four female gerbils and the five babies. Thankfully, all the gerbils seem…   read more >>

Merlin

Merlin

* Heartbreaking news. Little Merlin has passed away. He developed severe diarrhea overnight, and became lethargic in the morning. His foster mom rushed him to the vet, and despite the vet and staff’s best efforts, sweet Merlin passed away at the clinic. We’re waiting for test results to come back to see what caused Merlin’s passing, and we’re shocked at how quickly this happened. Our hearts are breaking for Merlin’s foster mom. She’s devastated. And we’re so sad for Marvin. He loved his brother so much. Foster mom is giving Marvin all kinds of extra love to help him through….   read more >>

Scruffy

Scruffy

We received this message from Kingston Humane Society: “44 rats were dumped in a recycling bin on a local trail in a small creek. Seven of them drowned, but we managed to catch and save the 37 remaining. Looking for help to place them.” How could we say no? Slim is one of the six rats we were able to take in from this group. We had Slim neutered and he was adopted to a home where they had other rats. A year later, Slim and his new cage mates were unfortunately surrendered to a shelter in Ottawa. Our adoption policy…   read more >>

Button

Button

Button was a baby hedgehog who came in with his mom Bernadette and two siblings. On his arrival, Button was much, much smaller than his siblings and was not thriving like they were. Sadly, little Button passed away during the night after only being with us a few days. We’re so sad to lose this sweet little hedgie, but we’re glad he could know love and warmth for his short time with us. Rest in peace, little Button.

Ollie

Ollie @ foster

January 2022 Sad news. We had to say goodbye to permanent resident, Ollie. He had a multitude of health issues that prevented him from being adoptable but he still had a great quality of life, so he became a permanent resident back in 2020. His forever foster mom went above and beyond for this sweet senior cat, getting him to countless vet visits and giving him all the love and care he deserved for his final years. We want to thank Kimberley from @fosteringseniorpets for all she did for Ollie. We will miss Ollie’s handsome face and his funny personality….   read more >>

King Kinloch

Madam Mim's babies

King Kinloch (one of Madam Mim’s babies) passed away suddenly on December 20th. We had a postmortem done, and it turns out he had a large clot at the base of his heart. Poor little guy. Rest in peace King Kinloch.

Waffle

Waffle was only a few weeks old when he was rescued with a group of 20 hamsters. He was extremely underweight and sickly when he arrived. Sadly, he passed away the day after coming into our care. Rest in peace, little Waffle.

Chu Chu

Chu Chu

Benny, Chu Chu, and Lilly ended up at Hamilton Animal Services when their owner passed away. When the shelter reached out to us for help, we knew we had to rescue this trio together. They’d been through enough without having to be separated from each other. Thankfully, we had a foster home willing to take in these sweet seniors. A short while after their rescue, their foster family noticed that Chu Chu was feeling poorly. She didn’t want to move from her favourite spot, and she had started to leak small spots of urine and feces. She was still happy…   read more >>

Ruby

Ruby

Sometimes, love just isn’t enough. Sometimes, an animal has been abused and neglected for so long, no amount of veterinary care can help them. Sometimes, we have to say goodbye when we have only just said hello. Ruby was skin and bones when she was found as a “stray” and brought to Hamilton Animal Services. Her entire body was infested with mites. Her ears were full of ear mites and infection. Her underside was severely urine scalded, and she had several other wounds. This didn’t happen to Ruby overnight. Someone had allowed her condition to get this bad before they…   read more >>

Mitsou

UPDATE: NOVEMBER 2nd, 2021 I want to tell you the story of my friend Mitsou. Two weeks ago she passed away and left a little paw print space in my heart. Her time with me was brief, but special. Ten years ago when I co-founded Ladybird Animal Sanctuary with my friend’s Lisa Winn and Janine Stoll I knew that sadly I wouldn’t be able to be a part of the fostering team given my constant touring schedule with my band Whitehorse. Well, a global pandemic hit 😱😱😱 and suddenly I was home all the time with my family. I told…   read more >>

Mya

Sad news. We had to say goodbye to our permanent resident, Mya. Her many medical issues finally caught up with her and we had to peacefully let her go. Our hearts are broken, and we’re sending many hugs to Mya’s forever foster family. We’re so thankful Mya had wonderful people to love and care for her for so long. Mya’s foster mom, Julia, wrote a beautiful tribute to Mya, that you can read below. Sleep well, sweet Mya. We’ll never forget you. 💔 “In 2016, a call went out for any homes that would be interested in fostering an older,…   read more >>

Stewart

Stuart - photo by Willow Bean Photography

Brothers Dodger and Stewart were surrendered to Hamilton Animal Services when their owner was moving. Dodger is much shyer than his brother Stewart, but they’re both friendly boys. Dodger and Stewart are now settling in at their foster home and we’ll have an update for you soon! Welcome to Ladybird, Dodger and Stewart! We’re so happy you’re here! UPDATE – August 7th, 2021 We’re so sad to say that after a long bout with ongoing medical issues, deteriorating health and suspected cancer, we’ve had to say goodbye to our sweet boy Stewart. We want to thank his foster mom for…   read more >>

Reba

Reba 2018

UPDATE: July 2021 We’re so sad to say that we’ve recently said goodbye to our sweet permanent resident Reba (Callie). Your foster family showed you love and care to the very end for eight years! We are truly grateful for their ongoing support. We will never forget you. Maybe 31, 2013 Because Reba was a little *ahem* “chubby” we had her blood and urine tested right after we rescued her from Hamilton Animal Control. Turns out she is diabetic. Gah! Reba spent a few days at the vet to get all the tests she needed to sort out her blood…   read more >>

Rajah

Rajah

In May of 2021, we had to say goodbye to our sweet permanent resident, Rajah. He was only with us for a few months, but those few months were filled with love and adventures. Raj was made a permanent resident shortly after his arrival because of his advanced age and long list of medical issues. We are so thankful to his forever foster mom for taking such great care of Rajah. And we’re thankful for our many supporters who sent donations for him. His foster mom wrote the lovely tribute below. Sleep well, Rajah. We will never forget you. ❤️…   read more >>

Delilah

Delilah

Delilah was found on a nature trail in Hamilton. Thankfully, a person walking the trail noticed Delilah, and knew that she wasn’t a wild rat. That kind person brought Delilah to safety at Hamilton Animal Services. Nobody came forward to claim Delilah, so we picked her up and took her straight to the vet. Delilah had already been suffering from a severe respiratory issue and she was not doing well. The vet prescribed medication and Delilah was transferred to her foster home. Despite the vet and foster home’s best efforts, Delilah passed away during her first night with us. We…   read more >>
